If you are the best poet in the world, you are allowed to be a jerk. Unfortunately, I didn't make the shortlist. I destroyed the best relationship of my life over three vodka shots and a bottle of Bacardi, because apparently there's a line between "emotionally unavailable artistic genius" and "drunken loser."
After I grieved—through poorly-attended poetry slams, naturally—I left school to see how much trouble I could cause across the country.
My romantic escapades included a homeless actor who forced me to write him a play; a stand-up comedian who dated me just to get material; a stranger whose honor I defended with a fistfight; and half the population of Iowa City, Iowa.
This is my journal. These are my poems. Those are dramatically punctuated. Short sentences.

This is a book that you've got to read all the way through when you first pick it up. It's witty, it's clever, and it's honest. The poems are relatable and funny, with lots of heart, and they truly do speak to what goes on in the mind of a writer. The author is able to portray curiosity, love, and heartache in a realistic way. I definitely recommend you give it a read, and pass it along to a friend.
